“Overall, it was a really good tournament,” said Marshall Corbett of the O’Shea’s Jasper Dregs. The 18th annual tournament welcomed “some pretty high level teams.”
The Dregs competed in three intense matches in hopes of being the coveted cup champions. They pulled up their socks after a disappointing morning loss against the Jagerbombers and secured a 38–0 victory against a mixed team from St. Albert and a few other communities.
The Dregs made it to the plate semi-final “which is the B side semi-final,” he explains. In the end, the team came up short against the Prince George Gnats, but Corbett commends his team. “The guys played well.”
The Calgary Hornets won the men’s cup, while the University of Alberta Pandas won the women’s cup. The cup champions took away a $1,000 purse. Grande Prairie’s Satyr’s Selects were the “old boys” champions.
Competitors wrapped up their play day with an awards presentation and party at the Athabasca Hotel.
The Dregs will continue to play rugby over the summer and are looking for more players. Anyone interested in playing rugby can call Corbett at 780-852-8298. Practices are fairly informal and happen “when guys can make it,” he said.
