Sylvie Pinard

Sylvie Pinard was born and raised in Montreal. In her youth, she was introduced to the art world and began her artistic journey with charcoal drawings, oil painting and mosaic creations. She became fascinated with the colors, shapes and textures found in nature and learned to appreciate their special relationships.

In her early twenties she set aside her paints and brushes and entered academia as a science student, studying geology and earned a Ph. D. with a speciality in micropaleontology. As a geologist, Sylvie worked in Nunavut, and Alberta studying and dating rocks by using her knowledge of specific microfossils, She began to realize that studying geology and fossils really represented a moment in time, in the same way that a painting captures the natural or perhaps imaginary world in a moment in time.

In 2002, Sylvie once again picked up her brushes and paints with the understanding that her experiences as a geologist shaped her artistic journey and deepened her belief that the fields of art and science are beautifully linked. This brought her a balance which is now reflected in her paintings.

In visiting with Sylvie as she talks about her art, she says that each piece or series she creates is a space-time capsule representation of her exploration of the world, believing that the journey is as important as the destination. She does not use a formula but allows the subject and medium to take her on a new journey to illustrate her vision and understanding of the world as she sees it. In doing so Sylvie has circled back to the three items that fascinated her in her youth, those being shapes, colors and textures.

Sylvie is the Featured Artist at the Jasper Art Gallery from Thursday, Aug. 31 through Saturday, Sept. 16. The exhibition will feature a selection of her geode paintings from her recent series titled Rock Stars. It has been said that this installation has a cosmic visual impact. All the paintings are round in shape. Sylvie explains that In a circle or round shape, all the energy or force is equal in all directions. There is no dominance of any kind, thus evoking stability, equality, calm, equilibrium, softness, life, transformation, circle of life, the cycle of the natural world. The cycle of life doesnt mean returning to the beginning . . . it is a new beginning with different conditions that lead to a new world always in search of equilibrium.

Sylvie Pinard is a member of the Jasper Artists Guild, the Federation of Canadian Artists and the Alberta Society of Artists. She participates in frequent group or solo exhibitions. Her works can be found in homes throughout Canada, the United States and Europe.
