The boys have a bit of an advantage compared to other high school teams because they’re able to practice outside. “The other teams haven’t started practising outside yet because their fields are still covered in snow,” said Corbett.

His players were supposed to attend a tournament last weekend, but it was cancelled. There are other tentative high school tournaments and games, but nothing is set in stone yet, he added.

Corbett did speak with the Edson rugby coach and the two are trying to arrange a game for this week, but “we’ll have to see how that goes.”

A rugby tournament will be in Jasper this weekend, though it’s not for high school students. The 18th annual Jasper Downhill Sevens begins on April 27 at Centennial Park.

“The Edmonton Rugby Union puts it on, so it’s the start to the northern Alberta rugby season,” said Corbett. He will compete with Jasper’s rugby team, which is sponsored by O’Shea’s.

There are 16 mens teams, eight womens teams and a few teams of “old boys” (over the age of 40) participating.

“It’s a good-sized tournament. There’s good competition.” The top mens and womens teams will win a $1,000 purse.
