Did you participate in our Blind Date with a Book for Valentines Day? Like many blind dates, we heard there were both some great reads and real duds in the mix. No duds in our new Star Trek collection though, a set we’ve recently received by donation from a local family. You’ll need to boldly go to check these out! And our French speaking community members provided us with many great new titles to add to our French language collection. They are up for grabs now on the NEW BOOKS display.
What do fishing and gardening have in common? On first glance not much: one is focussed on water the other, soil, two quite different elements. But hold on, let’s take another look. Both activities nourish us in body and in spirit. Both require knowledge and experience. Both need tools, both are favourite pastimes, both are said to quiet a racing mind and instill an appreciation of the natural world around us. We could go on and on and on. We thought both are worthwhile exploring and so we’ve highlighted them in preparation for the upcoming season (another thing they have in common!) We start off on Wednesday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. with an evening of Fish Stories from Pete Cherniawsky, a local fishing guide up at Maligne Lake and well known musician (and fireman) in town. He will show photos and even might bring his guitar to accompany his stories. Our library contribution to this evening will be to bring in fishing books in various genres: mysteries, fly fishing, guides to proven fishing holes and novels. Come and get hooked.
This is only the start to our Wednesday evening speaker series. After Pete’s tales, we’re moving on to gardening, bringing in members of our community with expertise on all that is important for gardening in Jasper. Partnering with the Jasper Local Food Society we will cover seed starting, composting, raised garden beds, gardening with native plants, growing tomatoes and many more. Please check our posters around town and social media for more information on these evening events.
You and your little ones are always welcome on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. to enjoy stories and crafts with Sheila. Make sure you mark Saturday, March 11 on your calendar for story time in French, and check our posters for special international story times that continue this season.
As much as we love to see you in the library, there are many things you can do from home with the help of our electronic services. For example, you can look for, and order in, books from our TRAC library system. You can renew your books yourself, you can read newspapers from all over the world (really: all over the world!), you can download ebooks, audiobooks, and even movies on your phone or computer—all for free. Please come to the circulation desk and we will help you get started. See you then.
