Residents should prepare for an extended power outage as the wildfire in Yellowhead County threatens the substation that supplies power to Jasper.

"With the rapidly evolving wildfire in the Edson area, transmission infrastructure critical to the power supply in areas west of Edson is threatened, including Hinton, Robb and Jasper," AltaLink stated.

As of noon on Sunday, the risk of a power outage in the Hinton and Jasper areas had decreased.

"The fire did not progress toward our transmission line feeding these areas as anticipated, and wind conditions have shifted the direction of the fire," AltaLink stated in the Sunday update.

"Thank you for your patience as we continue to monitor this situation."

A fire ban is also in effect for Jasper National Park and other areas throughout the region.

This comes after Edson and areas of Yellowhead County were evacuated for the second time this season due to wildfire.

The evacuation area is Highway 47 west to Medicine Lodge and south of Highway 16 to Township 520.

Live embers were spotted falling in Willmore Park south of Edson on Friday with the fire on the north side of the McLeod River, according to Yellowhead County.

An evacuation reception centre has been set up at the Expo Centre in Edmonton at 7300 116 Avenue.

The Yellowhead Highway is closed between Marlboro to Highway 32 as of noon on Saturday.
