Ann Thomas | Special to the 51°µÍø
Welcome to your new Jasper Seniors Society 51°µÍø column which will appear every two weeks courtesy of the 51°µÍø.
We had an action-packed meeting on Monday, March 13, with good attendance from members. Christopher Read, Director of Community Development for the Municipality of Jasper, spoke to the meeting at length regarding the upcoming changes and renovations being made to the Activity and Aquatic Centres. In order to accommodate these updates, the most notable will be that the pool will have a complete shutdown for three months starting in September and a partial shutdown starting in December. These may affect many seniors because of AquaFit and lane swimming. However, the Fitness Centre will still be open and the Seniors’ Lounge will not be affected. For further information, please see the Municipality’s website for Special Projects. We appreciate Christopher’s time and his attendance at our meeting.
Our next speaker was Tasha Porttin, owner of the Jasper Mettra Pharmacy, who spoke to the society regarding the free training course she is giving on March 29 and 30. Tasha recommends this Mental Health First Aid Seniors course for people who are dealing with seniors on a daily basis and can benefit from the skills learned. If you are interested in participating, please email to [email protected] or phone 780-852-4418 ext. 3. Tasha welcomes any personal enquiries at the Mettra Pharmacy.
There was a free Tai-Chi training workshop recently and now every Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. there will be free drop-in sessions for everyone at the Multi Purpose Hall at the Activity Centre. Tai-Chi is reputed to help with general body fitness as well as arthritis. Don’t be shy - give it a try!
Our big news is that our Annual Spring Dinner will be on April 24 at the Multi Purpose Hall. The cost will be $25 per member and Glenda the Great will be catering! If you are interested in coming please let us know by April 1 if possible by sending an email to [email protected].
If you are interested in participating in this fun event, let us know and we can offer you a membership.
We are pleased to announce that your Executive has obtained a free shuttle service to all Community Dinners at the Activity Centre which take place each Sunday until March 26. If you wish to be picked up by the Alpine Traveler Bus please call or text to reserve your seat at 780-931-9800. Deadline for seat reservations is noon on the Saturday before.
Anyone over 55 years of age can join the Society for a nominal $10 fee and receive newsletters and invitations to various planned outings and functions throughout the year.
The objectives of the Society, in part, are to promote the interests of seniors as well as to coordinate the services available to seniors in the community. The Society manages and maintains a Seniors’ Lounge in the Activity Centre where our monthly meetings take place on the second Monday of each month. We hope to have guest speakers at each meeting.
We hope you will follow this column and join us at our next meeting which is Monday, April 10 at 1:30 p.m. All seniors are welcome to attend and see what we are about. You can then decide if membership will be a benefit to you.
If you have any ideas or wish to voice any concerns please feel free to contact Janis Marks at 780-852-3973 or email to: [email protected]. We want to hear from you as to how we can make everyday living better for seniors in Jasper!
