The U15 Jasper Bearcats hosted the Edson Sabres this past Saturday for their third preseason game, but their first home game of the year.
The first period got off to a great start when Carson Campbell scored a wraparound goal and got Jasper on the board. Edson was unable to get one past Campbell's twin brother, Brady ("Soupy") until the five-minute mark in the period when the Sabres tied it up. Jackson Irwin quickly answered that goal with one of his own, putting the Bearcats back on top going into the intermission.
Irwin secured Jasper's lead by netting the first goal of the second period, followed shortly after by Edson's second goal. The score was 3-2 in the Bearcats favour by this point in the game, and it was a rough one to say the least. With one minute left in the period, Soupy made a huge save on a breakaway, only to be skated into and knocked over by the Sabre, who then shot again and scored before the netminder had a chance to get up and reset. The period ended in a 3-3 tie.
The third period was a back-and-forth battle. It started with Irwin breaking up a play in the defensive zone and passing the puck up to Drew Kovacs who took it all the way to the back of the net. Only to be answered by a power play goal by Edson, one minute later. Tied 4-4 now, Kovacs took the puck behind the net and passed it across to Irwin, who found Campbell set up for another tie breaker. Up 5-4 now, try as he might, Soupy couldn't do anything about the power play rebound that got past him with two minutes left in the game. The game ended in a 5-5 tie.
With a record of 1-1-1, the Jasper Bearcats will head to Drayton Valley this weekend for their final preseason game. Check out next week's sports section to find out how they did.
