Many of us have expressed themselves in writing in one way or the other: writing a diary, writing letters to relatives and friends, writing essays in school and reports in a job. In a way, we all were trained to achieve some sort of writing proficiency. However, there is a group of writing enthusiasts who like to explore the art of writing even deeper, to play with thoughts and ideas by structuring letters to words, words to sentences and sentences to scenarios that draw a reader in.
To be successful in this art, you need a pinch of talent, but you also need to put in your 10,000 hours of practicing. Sometimes, it is hard as a writer to keep the motivation high. The National Novel Writing Month, or "NaNoWriMo" for short, can help. It is an annual event in which participants attempt to write a 50,000-word novel in November. Everyone who achieves this goal is considered a winner, but far more important: there are writing meetings in which writers can exchange their challenges and tricks to help overcome their difficulties. The library is organizing three evenings to meet other writers: Thursday the ninth, 23rd and 30th of November from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. join the group in the library if you are working on a writing project and want to share your progress.
For all who are still in the beginner phases of expressing themselves in written form, the library and Habitat for the Arts provide writing prompts with which you can test your story writing skills. Just ask the staff at the library front desk.
Our children section, with its cozy fireplace, is now home to a new inhabitant. We have a stuffy library cat with the name Casper-Fable. Last Thursday evening, a group of children brought their favourite stuffy friends to the library to listen to bedtime stories. Afterward, the kids left their soft buddies in the library to have a sleepover with our new black and white friend for the first night in its new home. We hope that more children will enjoy with their parents the new children room attraction.
There is also a new attraction for adults in the library. We received over the years many beautiful puzzles as donations. Especially in the winter, we have a puzzle out on a table to be finished by our patrons. Starting this month, we have put all our puzzles in circulation! Members can choose from our more than 30 puzzles to take home, finish it there and bring it back to get a new one. We have 500-piece puzzles, 1,000 and even 2,000 pieces as well as puzzles in special shapes. Come and check them out.
Last but not least: we want to thank all volunteers who helped with the annual Scholastic Book Fair. It is a fundraiser to add new children’s books to École Jasper Elementary School classrooms and our Library. It could never be this successful without the many helpers donating hours of their precious time. A big thank you!
