Celebrate around the world

It is October, and we are cranking it up a notch.

Take in the Booklover Weekend Oct. 13 – 14. The library will host a pop-up Graphic Novels and Comics Bookstore from Edmonton’s Variant Edition on Friday (1–5 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.) in the foyer.

In collaboration with Habitat for the Arts, Talks by Authors will continue the fun on Saturday Oct. 14. At a special story time on Saturday morning (10:30 a.m.), Jennifer Ottaway, a star of Jasper’s art scene and children book illustrator, will read for us. Then at 12:30 p.m. the playwriter Christine Lesiak will perform from her astronomical family drama The Space Between the Stars, her radical adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince. “It takes the character of the pilot and transform him into a female astronomer and the prince into her son. And it is all about the night sky, the stars and the ephemerality of all existence.”

Come back if you dare at 2:00 p.m. when Bonnie Randall will read from her paranormal thriller The Shadow Collector. Set in western Canada, she will scare you with scenes of hidden horror. At 3 p.m. we will reunite with writing instructor Roberta Laurie as she probes her own memoires to guide us in the memoir writing genre.

Back by popular demand, on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 10:30 a.m., we reignite “Around the World” storytime. We invite you and your children to join us on a journey of stories exploring diverse festivities from around the world.

We also decided it is time to bring back board game evenings. On Thursday, Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m. we welcome all interested players for a board game evening.

And throughout the fall and winter, we will reinstate our perennial events:

  • Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. all caregivers with toddlers who would like to hang out with peers are invited to visit and use our children section where there will be toys and entertainment for the children To Just Let Them Play!
  • Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Holly, will host the popular Tween Takeover for nine-to-12-year-olds. We will learn or try something new each week guided by their interests.
  • Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. the knitting community in Jasper uses the library to exchange ideas, skills, and solutions in the library’s reading / knitting room.
  • Every first and third Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Jasper’s seniors (and pre-seniors) are getting together for the From the Stacks book reading, accompanied by discussion, light snacks and beverages.

And last but not least, we are adopting a library (stuffy) cat, and you have a chance to name it. Please write your suggestion on a piece of paper with your phone number and bring it to the library. The provider of the successful name will win a book prize. Mark the date, Thursday, Nov. 2, when your kids should bring in their a stuffy for an evening story time and a stuffy sleepover to help our new friend feel at home for its first night in the library.
