Word from the Library: School’s out for summer, library is in for fun

School is out for summer. The high school graduates are busy working in the real world. Summer camps have started for the younger students. Tourists are in town. Bears are along the roads. Elk look spiffy. Summer has arrived in Jasper.

School is out for summer. The high school graduates are busy working in the real world. Summer camps have started for the younger students. Tourists are in town. Bears are along the roads. Elk look spiffy. Summer has arrived in Jasper.

Summer has also arrived in the library: The summer reading club is in full swing. The club members are in for a treat and especially the Tuesday afternoon activities with Holly (from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) draw a crowd. New in our summer reading activities is however that we want to also entice adults in joining or rediscovering the reading excitement. To get the attention of the adult library users, we have created a bingo sheet for adults. Readers who can get one line crossed out will be in for a small treat while the one who manages the whole sheet will be in the draw for the grand prize (to be announced). So, look for the green bingo sheets at the library front desk or at the staff pick book display (hint: read a book from this shelf and you’ve already got one square covered!).

Another activity we strongly recommend for young and old is to go for a stroll either in the library or in one of Jasper’s neighborhoods and enjoy one of two storywalks we proudly present. The one in the library is a children's book spread out over several picture panels strung along the library shelves downstairs and upstairs.

The other storywalk is home-made, i.e. all of the design and the story was created by members of the library staff and financed by a FireSmart grant. The story tells you how to be prepared for an evacuation. It has all the information Parks Canada and the municipality would like inhabitants of Jasper to know, yet has the added benefit that the pictures and wording make it easy and enjoyable even for kids to read the panels. Scanning the QR code on each of the 10 panels connects you with even more information or organizations which can help you in case of an emergency evacuation. So, on a warm evening when you want to walk your dog, bring your children and stroll along Lodgepole Street to Poplar Ave. Eventually, this storywalk will make its way to other neighborhoods and in the end back to the library.

So, summer has arrived in town. Soak up the excitement.
