Word from the Library: What will 2023 bring?

The year 2022 is on its way out and a New Year 2023 is upon us. It is a time to reflect and celebrate everything we achieved this year. But we also want to look ahead for what is in store for us in 2023.

The year 2022 is on its way out and a New Year 2023 is upon us. It is a time to reflect and celebrate everything we achieved this year. But we also want to look ahead for what is in store for us in 2023.

Jasper Library had many events and programming items starting up again in 2022 after a long Covid bout with only a few patrons visiting the library. Locals and visitors discovered the library anew. The Jasper Municipal Library Board would like to thank everyone for their continued support. Library circulation remained high this year, with several monthly records set. We saw and see new members every week. And if you would like to get your free membership, visit the library at 500 Robson St. or call 780-852-3652, to find out what you will need. Please don’t forget parents, or guardians, are required to set up memberships for children in person.

Even with the most hard-working staff, a library would not run smoothly without volunteers. We send our deep appreciation to our dedicated Library volunteers Leo Arsenault, Lynda Krawec and Sheila Couture, who show up every week to help us pull books or put them away, water plants and dust shelves. Equally appreciated are our building partners ACFA Régionale de Jasper, Habitat for the Arts, Jasper Artists Guild, and the Municipality of Jasper, lending us a helping hand in funding projects and inspiring us with innovative ideas and projects.

Thank you Paulette Dubé, who helped make our return to in-person programming go so well this year with her Genius Loci program. If you haven’t seen the recordings, please check them out on the Jasper Municipal Library YouTube channel. Thanks also go to Andromeda Coffee for partnering with us on Open Mic Nights. Stories and treats go so perfectly hand in hand!

And what will 2023 bring for the library?

We have a new staff member! Sheila Hampel has joined us and will be taking over the reins for Saturday Storytime.

And speaking of Storytime: The library wants to be a place where everyone feels welcomed and at home but also opens a peek into the big wide world outside its doors. So, we will start a multi-language Storytime on Jan. 14 at 10:30 a.m. in partnership with the Municipality of Jasper. That Saturday, a mother of our community will read out children’s books in her mother language Czech. The next multi-language Storytime event will be on Feb. 11, we will have a Spanish-speaking mother as guest reader. Upcoming in March will be a French Storytime and a German Storytime in April.

From the Stacks, our adult reading program will be running now twice a month starting Jan. 5. Thank you to Linda Morgan for volunteering to be the reader.

Please find all the news and highlights from the library on social media Facebook and Instagram, as well as the Municipality of Jaspers community calendar.

As 2023 begins, our wish for you is that each day includes a smile. Whether it is watching the sun rise, visiting with friends, reading or listening to a good book, or ending your day walking by the brightly lit World Tree. You deserve that smile.
