Do you know the story “Frederick” from Leo Lionni? Frederick is a little mouse who gets ready for long winter months together with his fellow mice and while most of them were collecting food, Frederick specializes in other treats… And when the mice’s food supply dwindles at the end of the winter, Frederick is there to provide them with different nourishment for their cravings.
Let the library be your Frederick.
It was a long winter for us as well, wasn’t it? We have many cravings right now for warmth, for colour, for fragrance, for flowers, for fresh food, for getting together with all our families and friends and enjoying the outdoors.
Here is what we in the library can do for you:
You crave ideas for a beautiful paradise in your small backyard? Every Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. different community members will talk about how to create your best garden/backyard yet. The upcoming topics are how we can remodel our small garden space to our personal oasis and how we can protect our garden from and live together in harmony with wildlife and weather.
We also want to satisfy the craving for belonging and being together with friends! Join us Thursday, April 13 in the afternoon at 1:30 p.m. for our seniors’ book reading program “From the stacks”. Our youngest patrons will be treated to a special sound experience with the International Family Storytime in German and with German books on Saturday, April 15 at 10:30 a.m. or come to a movie viewing for National Canadian Film Day for the film “Wildhood” on Thursday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m., a film where the young indigenous hero finds community, identity, and love in the land where he belongs. And a week later (April 27, 6:30 p.m.) you will be fed pasta by JasperLife while you watch a movie, yet to be announced.
The library will be full with rainbow colours during Pride week (April 16 to 22), decorated by our high school youth. And we will feed your craving for poetry and expressing yourself just as the person you are in our Open Mic poetry reading on April 19 at 6:30 p.m. If you feel like it you can visit the library ahead of time and pick one of our Pride poetry books to select a poem you would like to learn by heart. Then you can present this poem at the Open Mic evening. And our rainbow week will find a glittering end on Friday, April 21 at 10:30 a.m. when a special guest will read for Pride Storytime.
I can hear you now saying “But where is the fragrance? I crave fragrance!”. Oh, let me point you to our beautiful tulip bouquet at the circulation desk and feel free to take a big sniff of these spring flowers. Because now we know: winter is on its way out and spring is coming!
