Heatwave expected to affect Jasper all week long

Following a month of drizzly weather, Jasper has finally hit its summer stride.

Environment Canada is forecasting warm, sunny weather throughout the week with temperatures reaching or exceeding 30 C.

The temperature is expected to cool slightly down to 25 C during the weekend, with a mix of sun and clouds.

This comes as Environment Canada has issued heat warnings for much of Alberta, including Hinton.

It has yet to issue a heat warning for Jasper as of 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Nevertheless, the Municipality of Jasper urged in a social media post for everyone to take necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy.

Hinton also issued a fire restriction effective Monday due to the extreme heat.

Hinton residents are asked to use extreme caution and continuously monitor backyard recreational fire pits and barbecues, and unapproved fires, such as random camping within town boundaries, are not permitted.

The fire danger for Jasper National Park is currently rated as very high.

Environment Canada advises residents of and visitors to the warned regions to take the following precautions:

  • Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
  • Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
  • Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.
