Hinton RCMP has received reports of possible trafficking of foreign workers in the area. In light of this, Hinton RCMP would like to remind the public of the following:

Human Trafficking is defined as recruiting, transporting, transferring, receiving, holding, concealing or harbouring a person, or exercising control direction or influence over the movements of a person, to exploit them or to assist in facilitating their exploitation (sections 279.01 and 279.011 of the Canadian Criminal Code).

Contact the RCMP to file a complaint if you feel you are a victim of labour trafficking or exploitation due to fraudulent activity initiated by your employer. This may mean receiving threats of losing employment, withholding or controlling personal identification or passports, being threatened with deportation and threats or acts of violence toward the employee or family members of the employee if they do not comply with demands.

If you are a Temporary Foreign Worker seeking employment from a business or franchise here are things you should know:

  1. Employment agencies cannot:
  • Demand or collect a fee from a Temporary Foreign Worker for recruiting services or for helping them find a job.
  • Demand or hold a bond or deposit from an individual.
  • Collect any fee from a person even if the agency may pay back later.
  • Tell an employer that the employer can recover costs of the agency’s services from the employee; this includes deducting from the employee’s salary or demanding cash from the employee.
  • Make an individual pay for other services as a condition to help the person find work; this includes immigration services.

2) Temporary Foreign Workers may  if they believe an immigration consultant or employment agency has:

  • Deceived or misled them;
  • Charged prohibited fees; and
  • Broken the rules described in legislation.

3) You can phone the Service Alberta Contact Centre at 1-877-427-4088 to discuss your concerns.
