HINTON, Alta. — It's been hard to find a hotel room in Hinton, Alta., lately.

The centre has been set up in a field adjacent to the Hinton Curling Club (837 Switzer Drive) and will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. MT.

Motorists will not be allowed to stop or exit off Highway 16 while travelling through Jasper National Park. There will be no washrooms or refuelling options, and motorists must obey all posted speed limits and signage.

"It's a terrible thing that's happened to our neighboring community, and it is our job and our responsibility to show up and be as neighborly as possible going forward."

Numerous pets from Jasper are currently being housed at the Hinton and District SPCA Animal Care Centre free of charge until their owners can return home or other accommodations can be made.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith both visited Hinton on Monday (Aug. 5) to receive a situational briefing on the Jasper wildfire and meet with evacuees and members of the unified command unit.

Thunderstorms are forecasted to move toward the east or southeast through the evening before weakening overnight.

Alberta Health Services says nursing staff will remain on-site to provide triage, assessments and referrals to emergency departments in neighbouring communities, as needed.

Access is currently being granted only to commercial vehicles, which are defined as trucks, tractors, trailers or any combination thereof, with a registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 11,794 kilograms.
